Spognardi, born on October 18, 1908, played second base for the Red Sox during the 1932 season. Wearing number two, Spognardi compiled a .294 batting average. Unfortunately, this season is remembered as one of the three worst in major league history, with the Red Sox finishing with 43 wins and 111 losses, 64 games behind the league champion New York Yankees. | |
Spognardi left the major leagues after only one season and entered Tufts Medical School. He graduated in 1936 and opened his own practice in Roslindale, Massachusetts. Spognardi also worked on the staff at Faulkner Hospital and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. | |
Spognardi died on January 1, 2000, in Roslindale. | |
