Dirrell D. Sample (1891-1954), A1916, returned to Tufts as a coach for the football and basketball teams in 1923 and later served as the Tufts College purchasing agent and the second director of the Tufts College Bookstore, a position he held until the time of his death. | |
Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, on May 5, 1891,Dirrell Sample was the eldest of twelve children. He attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, Maine before entering Tufts. While at Tufts, he was an outstanding athlete and football star. He also served in the Army during World War I and attended Officers Candidate School when the Armistice was declared. Before returning to Tufts in 1923, he taught and coached at high schools in Massachusetts and Quebec. He married Marrietta Kirby in 1919 andhad one daughter, Lois. In 1934, Sample received a bachelor of laws degree from Suffolk University. Sample was killed in an automobile accident on September 25, 1954.At the time of his death, Sample and his wife were residing at 29 Sawyer Avenue on the Medford campus. | |
