Halligan, William J., 1899
William J. Halligan, A1923, H1976, was a longtime benefactor and trustee of the university. He was given an honorary degree in 1976 in recognition of his service to the university and his achievements in the electronics industry. | |
Halligan was born on December 8, 1898 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He attended Tufts from 1919 to 1920, when he left to attend West Point. He served as a shipboard radio operator in World War I. A member of the class of 1923, he was awarded his bachelor's degree extra ordinem in 1947. | |
Halligan founded a company, Hallicrafters, that manufactured radio transmitters and receivers. The company produced a mobile radio station that was hailed by the US Army as one of the significant weapons of World War II, alongside the Flying Fortress and the Garand rifle. | |
Halligan died on July 14, 1992. | |
Halligan Hall, on the Medford campus, is named in his honor. | |
