South Hall, 1991
South Hall, the newest and largest dormitory on the Medford campus of Tufts University, was completed and opened in 1991.
South Hall was built to relieve pressures on other dormitories, and to increase housing opportunities for juniors generally forced to live off campus. It contains 378 bed spaces in singles and doubles. South is known for its long, thin rooms, as opposed to the square rooms found in most other dorms.
Built without help from a major donor, South was chosen as a temporary name to describe the building's location on campus. University officials expected to rename the dormitory on the occasion of a gift from a donor or trustee.
As of 2000, South Hall retains its "temporary" name and still serves as a dormitory for students of all years.
