Concise Encyclopedia of Tufts History
|The Amalgamates was Tufts' first co-ed acapella singing group, founded in 1984. The group was established to add a new dimension to Tufts' acapella scene, which until that time had been dominated by the male Beelzebubs and the female Jackson Jills. The ensemble's name was chosen to capture the mixed-voice makeup of the group, and it has come to be familiarly known simply as the Mates.|
The Mates tour regularly in addition to numerous performances on the Medford campus. They have released eight recordings, most recently "Stopping for Breakfast." Their musical repertoire draws heavily on popular music arranged for multiple voices.
