What the book salesman said
What the book salesman said
Here's one everybody and his brother will be buying, a love story, it's about the most beautiful girl that ever lived, and no exaggeration, I read it myself, and how she loves this fellow and he loves her, and they get married and they're so happy it hurts, almost, of course this is a historical romance, it's all in the past.
Our leader in mysteries this season is big stuff, it's got mil- lions of characters, lots of them get killed in places you and I never even heard of, but you don't find out how it happened because the chapters are short, see, only one chapter to a day, see, and you don't find out for a long time how it comes out, and say, there's one guy in it who - but you'd better read it for yourself, everyone else is.
Poetry, no, we haven't been bringing out much poetry this year, in fact none, you see people don't have time really to read poetry, so much on their minds this year.
What people want to know is why, they want to get a good clear explanation of everything, so they'll know right where they stand now, and how everything got this way, and we have a book. In fact we have several books, and boy are the general public grabbing them off the counters, of course some of them are different, but they give the average reader a clear in- sight into the real problems confronting us at this time, you might say the problems behind the problems, and peo- ple are thinking a lot about these things this year.
So I'll put you down for something, shall I? No poetry, of course. Fifty thousand on the love, make it a hundred. On the mystery ten million won't last any time, it changes so fast, but you can re-order. Make it sixty million the second time, ninety million the next. Some on the why books, people go for that, they all want to know why this year.
