Sleep and poetry
Sleep and poetry
When I surrender to my enemy, sleep,- The less-rebelled at, not the longer one,- I lose the kingdom never mine to keep More bitterly than men have ever done.
This kingdom of the flesh was never mine. I was its jealous ruler for a day. Unwilling, overcome by sleep, I sign One-half its headlong history away.
A dark and joyless enemy is sleep. Nevertheless a word outlasts his night. I write these poems on a page to keep To be the sun that makes the morning bright.
