The seeker
The seeker
A man stood in the great hushed nave Of a mighty church and roundabout Streamed gently colored light, diffused Through marvelous windows, ad the sound Of a organ pealing, and the choir, broke out, And over all was quiet beauty, but the man Was troubled, saying, "Is this God? Can all this noble place, it's song And chants, be God? I cannot think That this were so. "He pondered long, And rising slow at last, resolved To go that day in search of God, To seek Him where he might be found.
And so traveled far and wide, and every where He went - in market place, in halls of state, O'er wasted lands, and sea and town, In countries far, and kingdoms strange To ask if anyone could answer To his quest. And men would say, Wherefore the, and who art thou To come with questions thus? Do you not know The church, or our great king?" And he would answer sad and say, A seeker after God am I But He is not in church, nor anywhere That may point, or lay my hands on any thing And say 'Just here, or here, is God.'"
The search grew long and months grew into years And year succeeded year in host Before the man, world-weary in his quest, returned, and trod once more the streets Of home, and wiser then than most, Prepared to settle down, and stay His days in peace till he should die, Thinking perhaps that death would be The answer to his quest. And then He chanced to stand one day Within the mighty church whose nave Had heard his murmurs years before And round him surged the waves Of glorious organ sound, that seemed to send Their rolling echoes everywhere and then Upward on the shaft of life that streamed Through channel window, rose a song, Limpid and trembling-sweet and pure, And hearing the words, "In all the world And in all the heaven, and between, Know ye that God is only love, and love Is in the heart," The humbled man Sank to his knees, and bowed his head And knew at last, that God May not be found, but only in the heart.
