Fragment from an old dance
Fragment from an old dance
Faintly and fine the violin Floats silver melody across the air All laden with the shine of moon, Raises it's delicate sweet din To urge the swaying phantom ladies And their ruffled swains To leave the winding shadowy garden paths And join hands in the dance again, Soft shine the lights On terrace and on wall, Wink slowly in the night, Swing bright in tower and in hall Slowly the figures move. Deeply they bow and curtsey, and a face Glows in the candle light. They form to dance the stately minuet, Old strange figures with an old strange grace. Faintly - faintly, and fine, the song Is taken up, old echoes still softly in the silence, Then, faintly, and fine, And low o'er the garden there begins The haunting singing of the violin. | |
