To a girl I know
To a girl I know
Why are you always calm like this, and cold? Oh, do you never, reckless, once give way And sweep that ordered mind with what you say In gusts of temper blazing uncontrolled? Why do you never rage and storm and beat Your hard-clenched fists upon a table top? Are you so much your master that you stop Before you scream or stamp your two small feet?
But more than this - do you yield to the bright Breathlessness of love - once; or thirst for wine Or want to lie in open fields all night To let the cool moon drench you, see the shine Of stars light up your hair? You may be right In being calm, but you can not be mine.
