Sonnet to a dancing-partner
Sonnet to a dancing-partner
What did we say, that I remember you Like gold light shining in a shadowy place? What did we do that hour, what did we do That everywhere to-day there is your face?
We danced, and eye to eye we moved alone, Breast against breast and knee to knee. No sound Except you speaking, none, except, mist-blown, Rhythms that carried us, that veiled us round.
Can you forget, then, how our glances caught, Tangling in breathless pain? I only know There was a word you did not say that shot, Arrowy, at my heart and now I go Bearing your mound of love. Whether or not Our lips have said, 'I love you,' it is so.
