The double life
The double life
What happens once can happen twice, With lightning bolts or dots on dice. But I found it especially hard to see Why things should happen twice to me. I lost a hat, and called it fate; It was gone again at an early date. I missed a train, which I never do, And one week later I made it two. But when for toothpaste I used soap A second time, I abandoned hope. My curses made the lather bubble. O double, double, toil and trouble, I cried, or words to that effect, And lost the last of my self-respect. I called a girl by another's name, And took her to dinner, and did the same. The traffic cop I bumped last week I'm driving around to-day to seek. But my bravest attempts have done no good. I might have known that they never would. What happens once will happen twice Without any help from men, or mice. | |
