Did you dream, then, long ago, When you took my hand, That my simple magic word Was one I did not know? You believed me when you heard, And a light came in your eye. I accepted all you gave, Though I know not why. I possessed the only key, I unlocked the hidden way. Now I tell you that to me, Lost for words to say, Wisdom from I know not where Whispered me to dare Use the password I had guessed.
Poets happen on one word, Hasten by the rest; And after - when their life has taught What their hearts had earlier caught, Magic is familiar stuff. Now I knew a poet's art Blossoms on a troubled heart, And though within me sprang the seed That flowered at a mutual need, Only now I see That a magic old to you Unbidden came to me.
