The way the stars went up
The way the stars went up
This is the way the stars went up: A storm of stars, a gale, Yet far away, so far and high That heaven was hushed and pale.
And where I lay, below the fern, I felt the wind go by. Over me laced the fronded green, And over the leaves the sky.
I thought the stars a blossomy bough On some enormous tree - I thought the feathery arch of fern A sky that brushed my knee
Whatever the meaning might have been Was too profoundly kept. Under the stars, beneath the fern, I was earth, and slept.
