Ode for the hundredth birthday of William Upham
Ode for the hundredth birthday of William Upham
Words by J.A. Holmes, Music by H.R. Boardman
Deep in our living days are twined The branches of the vine you set. The sun and rain do not forget The children of your heart and mind. And now we know You chose a wider ground, Richer and more profound Than common country earth. Your hundred years have yielded up their worth, And we have sailed to find The boundless realms of mind. In foreign lands you stepped ashore, Half way around the world from home. Your children's children ask no more Than bearing each his gift to come And bring you harvest, bring you fruit, And honor as we can your name, That secret and enduring root From whence our generation came.
