This ward was so named from the gate which anciently divided it into parts, and which division is yet continued in matters of local jurisdiction, under the respective appellation of Bishopsgate Within, and Bishopsgate Without; the former contains the precincts of Allhallows, St. Peter, St. Martin Outwich, St. Hellen and St. Ethelburga; the latter consists of precincts. It is bounded on the east by ward, Portsoken ward, and part of the Tower liberty; on the south, by Langbourn ward, on the west by ; ward, and on the north by parish. The whole ward is governed by an alderman, and sends members to the court of common council. | |
