Whitehall. (Plate II.)
Whitehall. (Plate II.)
The accompanying print is engraved from a very accurate and interesting drawing of this Palace, made with a pen and ink, apparently about the time of James II. It is of a series taken by some curious person at that period, and was purchased, with others, from the relatives of a deceased artist, in whose collection it had been many years. It is now in the possession of Thomas Griffith, Esq. of Pall-mall. The print has been carefully reduced from the drawing, which is in outline only, and is times its size.
This view, which is , represents a number of objects mentioned by various writers, and not elsewhere to be met with. Amongst the principal we may notice the Privy Garden, tastefully disposed with its walks and fountains; the old Horse Guards; the celebrated Gaming House in ; Wallingford House, now converted into the Admiralty; , Rosomond's Pond: and, in the extreme distance, Arlington House, on the site of which the present Buckingham House stands.
The statue of James II. does not appear to have been then set up behind the Banquetting House, as we observe its place supplied by a sort of vase fixed on a pedestal. If this circumstance be correct, the drawing here copied must have been made some time previous to the abdication of that monarch.
