Ely Place

Where stood once the mansion of the bishops of Ely, from whence its name is derived, is nearly all swept away by the ruthless hand of time. There is left, however, St. Ethelreda's Chapel, with its wondrous boldly-arched roof, its splendid row of windows,-that, at the east end, being finely and richly ornamented. Shakspeare, in Richard III., incidentally mentions the gardens and the fine strawberries grown in Ely Gardens. In Richard II., he again refers to Ely House as the place in which John of Gaunt, time honoured Lancaster, died, and where he held his last interview with Richard II. One other relic has survived the Vandalism of the age-a stone mitre, said to have adorned the gate or walls of Ely House, beautifully cut, bearing the date , and now the sign of the Mitre Tavern, Mitre Court, Hatton Garden, may be seen fixed in the wall.
