Was born, in , , the eminent painter and moral satirist. He may be pronounced the greatest caricaturist that ever lived. His colouring is solid though unpretending; his "March to Finchley " is too little known, for it bears the stamp of his highest genius. "The Rake's Progress," "The Harlot's Progress," and "La Mariage a la Mode," are works that gained for the early English school of painting world-wide fame, and their truthfulness and vivid reality have never been surpassed. He died in , and is buried in Chiswick churchyard.
