At No. 6 resided Goldsmith, after Johnson rescued him from the clutches of his landlady, in Green Arbour Square.

The " Cheshire Cheese" furnished many a bowl of punch to Johnson and Goldsmith, who supped there frequently. The Rev. W. G. Barnes, lecturer at St. Bride's Church, lived in Wine Office Court, and planted here a fig-tree that grew to wonderful perfection. Shoe Lane Contained a celebrated cockpit (temp. James I.), and about one hundred years ago, this neighbourhood was noted for its charming gardens, its lime trees and rookery, and wore all the aspects of being a rural retreat.

The Bishop of Bangor lived here, at Bangor House, south of St. Andrew's Church; and Bangor Court, still in existence, testifies to the locality.
