Vote for the Disbandment of the Army.
Reresby, , p. 66. June 4 [].
The Commons voted two hundred thousand pounds to be given for disbanding the army; but under great restrictions, fearing the king might take the money and convert it to other uses. Wherefore great penalties were levelled against the officers of the exchequer and others through whose hands it was to pass, to prevent their diverting it from its right channel, and this done, the money was cheerfully given, the nation and its representatives dreading nothing so much at that time as a standing army.
