His Royal Highness [the duke of York] this day engaged the whole Dutch fleet off of Southwold Bay. After a sharp dispute of about eight hours the Dutch fleet gave way and retreated. In the engagement was unfortunately lost that noble and gallant sea commander Edward Montague, earl of Sandwich and vice-admiral of England. | |
