If You Ask Me: A Global Banker Reflects on Our Times
Wriston, Walter B.
No Hiding Place
There's a preconception among business students that their first management assignment in a large organization, like Citibank, closes off options to explore other departments--
Not in our shop. Every quarter my partners and I sit down and review with every group head every officer who is perceived to have outstanding potential. We consider where they could move, what their experiences are--that sort of thing. Then we match up opportunities around the organization with lists of our best qualified people. We make mistakes, but in general the system works.
That doesn't mean that your unique talents will be immediately recognized and applauded by everyone on a voice vote. But it does mean that over some reasonable time frame, if you're really good, we'll discover it. Our demand for talent is so insatiable, you won't find any place to hide.
