Athletics Rosters of Tufts University
The Athletics Rosters of Tufts University is the result of a project to collect and record the participants in organized athletics at Tufts University. The names contained in these rosters were compiled from the records of the Department of Physical Education/Athletics and particularly the Athletic Association Meeting Minutes and team files, as well as publications such as student newspapers, the Tuftonian, the Brown and Blue, and the Jumbo Book. The main focus of the project has been to build a list of participants, but team records and game results have been included for some years. When known, captains and coaches are noted, as well as MVPs and letter-winners.
The earliest rosters are from
1864
, and the most recent are from the
1988
-89 academic year. The rosters are organized by year then alphabetically by sport and team. Prior to the academic year
1954
-55, team rosters were organized under a heading designated by the calendar year. Thus, winter and spring teams from the academic year
1934
-35, accompanied by rosters of the fall sports in
1935
-36, are included under the
1935
listing.From
1954
-55 on, team rosters are organized according to the academic year.
The most recent updates concerned team rosters from
1927
up through
1966
.Women's teams were added for those years, and existing gaps in the men's rosters were also filled. In addition, a clear distinction was made between the men's and women's teams of that period.Prior to the
1927
listing teams are organized by season (fall, winter, spring), but from
1927
on an effort has been made to reorganize according to alphabetical order.
The project is ongoing and the rosters will be added to and updated as more information is gathered and compiled. The project is a combined effort of the Department of Athletics and the office of Digital Collections and Archives with financial support from the office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences. It is planned as a supplement to the forthcoming narrative book "Jumbo Footprints: A History of Tufts Athletics."The third part of the project will be a digital film record of the same subject.
