For this paper, you have two options:

1) Write a personal essay about one way in which difference from the social norm has affected you or someone you know. This doesn't mean you have to write about your own sense of being "different" necessarily; you could also write about how you relate to others who are different. Like all papers, this one should have a thesis, although you might not say what it is until the end. Your thesis, however, will focus your essay on a central point. Don't start at the beginning of your life and work forward; figure out what you want to say about difference and present your "argument," using personal experience as your evidence rather than external sources.

2) Write a short creative piece (poetry or a short story, for example), followed by a brief analysis of your own work. In the analysis, you should reflect on the message you are trying to convey (or question you are asking) with your piece and why you think it is important. Your analysis should include "evidence" from your creative writing in order to be specific. Tell us why you chose certain words over others and what effect you think the structure of your piece has.

For both of these options, you will want to evoke a sense of place and time, using description, dialogue, and other storytelling techniques. Try to appeal to the reader's senses of smell, taste, sounds etc to make your descriptions vivid.
