April 1968 “Rivers of Blood” speech, which used extreme racial rhetoric to establish the
Wolverhampton MP as the House of Commons’ chief opponent of Commonwealth immigration. It
examines the following two years, through the Conservative upset in the June 1970
general election, analyzing how Powell used his new position in the ... read morepublic eye,
different groups reacted to his words, and other actors worked on the same subject. In
doing so, the work seeks to challenge established approaches to Powell by looking more
at his various impacts than his specific actions, separating the man from the way his
words led to an evolution of the political issues of immigration and
