This project questions why depictions of highly-ordered domestic interiors emerged as a distinct and independent genre in seventeenth-century Dutch painting. Recognizing that these works were produced at a uniquely critical time in the history of the Dutch nation, my thesis represents an multidisciplinary exploration in interpretive possibilities. My hypothesis offers that these works may serve as ... read morea psychological workspace for the construction and articulation of a collective proto-national Dutch identity, one in which "Dutch" and "bourgeois" are conflated. In conspicuously excluding the evidence of recent traumatic events to create the idyllic domestic realm in which Dutch identity is worked out, I propose that this group of paintings suggest that these traumatic events themselves may have necessitated the political unification of the future United Republic of the Netherlands and the construction of a collective "Dutch" identity.read less
