Queer Appalachia (QA) is an online collective founded by Gina
Mamone, creator of the zine Electric Dirt and an Instagram account with an
ever-growing 160,000 followers. This project situates the QA collective within
Appalachia's history of land degradation and corporate exploitation to argue that
claiming queer presence and legacy undermines corporate projects of land and
resource extraction. ... read moreThe first two chapters address QA's use of internet networks
and homespun repertoires like gardening, cooking, and embroidery to stake what I
define as an "organic" queer presence and counter QTPOC erasure. The final chapter
figures QA's intervention alongside the Mountain Valley Pipeline tree-sits in
western Virginia to assert the queer potential in environmental activism. This
project asks how queer home-making in zine, Instagram, and environmental activism
counters Appalachia's continuing history of exploitation by energy companies, and
sees queer homemaking aesthetics as a turn from possessing to protecting the
land.
