Osteoarthritis (OA)
is a joint disease that causes those afflicted by it to experience extreme discomfort
and pain. To date, there are no cures or treatments for the disease other than lifestyle
change and inflammation management. This lack of treatment is in part due to the
difficulty developing an appropriate model of OA. To overcome this impediment to finding
drug therapies, our lab has ... read morecreated three devices to create a mouse model of OA. The
focus of this thesis is the third-generation device, the so-called "JM Mini." We created
the JM Mini to address shortcomings of the heavily used and highly successful
first-generation device, the JM1, while retaining its performance—namely
producing comparable results under similar experimental conditions. An additional novel
component that was added to the project was the design and implementation of a
monitoring system to ensure that multiple devices are functioning properly at all
times.
