Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can lead to many different issues later in life. It can also be difficult to treat those who have gone through ACEs. This study examined the effect of a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) program compared to a control program of Stress Management Education (SME) on the cortisol awakening response and stress, anxiety, depression, somatization, hostility, and ... read morePTSD symptoms in individuals with ACEs. Participants were randomized to either the MBI program or the SME program. 40 participants completed the study. Cortisol samples were taken before and after the intervention and behavioral questionnaires were administered before the intervention, after the intervention, and six months later. The results showed that both programs were effective in improving stress, anxiety, depression, and somatization symptoms and that participants maintained those improvements six months later. There was no effect of either intervention on the cortisol awakening response and there were no associations between the change in the cortisol awakening response and improvements in any clinical symptoms measured.
