Abstract: Beginning in June 1972, the workers of Santiago's industrial periphery enacted their own vision of the Chilean Revolution by creating the Cordones Industriales. Rather than organizing along trade or industrial lines, the workers structured themselves geographically in order to better respond to the needs of their local territories. This study provides a close reading of the Cordones' ... read morehistory across the time and space of the revolution, which both deepens our understanding of the revolutionary dynamics at work in Chile, and highlights a key contradiction of revolution: it remained a non-socialist revolution wrapped up in the discourse of socialism. What began as a relatively autonomous and localized struggle for socialization in Cerrillos-Maipú, became the revolution's first line of defense during the twin crises of October 1972 and June 1973. In doing so, however, the Cordones became trapped in a defensive posture and were unable to produce a revolutionary breakthrough.
