Fibrous blends of polyethylene terephthalate, PET, and polylactic acid, PLA, at blend concentrations of 100/0, 70/30, 50/50, 30/70 and 0/100 were fabricated by electrospinning. The electrospun PET/PLA blends were crystallized at temperatures before Tc of PLA and at Tc of PET. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the surface morphology of both amorphous and crystallized fibers and ... read morethermogravimetric analysis was used to study the thermal degradation of PET/PLA blends at high temperatures. Differential scanning calorimetry and wide angle X-ray scattering were used to measure the degree of crystallinity for all crystallized blends. We report crystal formation in the PET component and in the PLA component for samples crystallized at both crystallization temperatures. Results show that the degree of crystallinity of each blend component is negatively impacted by the presence of the other blend component. Furthermore, we observe poor PET crystallization in electrospun PET/PLA fibers.read less
