  • This thesis explores the Transcendentalists' involvement in debates regarding slavery and American expansionism in the mid-nineteenth century. It is informed by studying the Transcendentalists' classical and pastoral influences, from Virgil to Thomas Jefferson, and ultimately deals with issues such as utopianism and Millennialism.
