Abstract: This thesis addresses three illustrated Scriptures printed in Middle
Eastern languages. All three of these books were printed in Europe after the Council of
Trent (1545-1563) and exemplify, in one way or another, the contentious nature of
translating in early modern Europe. The Antwerp Polyglot Bible (1569-1572), the Medici
Arabic Gospels (1590/1), and the Oskan Armenian Bible ... read more(1666-1668) serve as windows into the
complex circumstances from which they arose. They are examined here in their larger visual
and cultural contexts, with a specific emphasis on the ways in which non-Western languages
were printed and received throughout Europe and the Levant.
