My project is an anthropological study of the process of passing a Massachusetts law which regulates the care and treatment of incarcerated pregnant women and the production of noncompliance with this law, through discourse emerging from the State House and from advocates for the law. It asks, if the carceral state is produced, maintained, fortified and escalated by law, how, then, do advocates ... read moreattempt to use the legal system to seek reform, relief, and redress? I attempt to take a critical look at the wins and losses of advocacy for the Anti-Shackling Law. I do this to consider these lessons in conversation with scholars who have done the work of understanding the carceral state as a reproductive justice issue.read less
