Monarch butterflies are an iconic pollinator found in North America that are of conservation concern who rely on their host plant, milkweed, to be able to reproduce. Conservation biologists have identified urban areas as an important resource for pollinator conservation efforts. The research that I completed over the course of summer 2021 through Tufts Summer Scholars and during my senior thesis ... read morethis past year explored landscape effects that can impact monarch oviposition (egg laying) behavior. I have identified multiple ecological factors which affect monarch oviposition, from a broader neighborhood scale down to individual patches and plants. This work can provide insight on the type of garden that can provide the best habitat for monarch conservation in urban areas and allow for more targeted conservation efforts.
