This paper is based on primary and secondary research methods to discuss the development of the anti-Haitian narrative in Dominican history, and the dynamics of the Dominican immigrant population in the United States. Dominican Americans were then interviewed as a test case to explore whether the unique circumstances brought about by immigration can change opinions. In the sample interviewed, the experience of discrimination and cultural adaptation as an immigrant in the United States did contribute to a feeling that Haitians should not be prejudiced against. While few in the sample thought that reconciliation or greater rights for Haitians in the Dominican Republic were possible, this research indicates that the anti-Haitian sentiment in the Dominican Republic can change through exposure to new ideas and experiences. Further research with a larger sample is recommended, as most immigrants in the sample exhibited opinions not previously described in the literature.read less
