Research in Child Development is essential to understanding how best to support the positive development of all individuals, with critical implications for children, parents, teachers, policymakers, community members, and beyond. Currently, in order to understand this development, the field puts a lot of emphasis on finding generalizable rules by studying groups, but an average group effect might ... read morenot apply to any specific individuals. Whereas group data offers fascinating insight into how groups develop, it is not able to account for how specific individuals change within themselves. A new shift from focusing on between-person differences to within-person change allows researcher and stakeholders to understand person-specific developmental pathways that cannot be represented by a "one-model-fit-all" group finding. This new methodology has direct applications for reframing the questions people ask in research, the way that people answer the questions, as well as the scope to which we can apply the findings.
