In her interactions with others, a young, Black, energized Rebecca Primus never accepted anything less than a level of passion that rivaled her own. Hailing from New England, Rebecca moved South to not only teach but to inspire. What started as a temporary teaching position at the Civil War’s end expanded––thanks to Rebecca’s intrinsic desire for the betterment of all those around her––into an ... read moreentrepreneurial endeavor to build a brand new schoolhouse for newly freed community members. Throughout her journey, Rebecca immersed herself in a new community, strengthened her connections back home, and faced the complexity of being an outsider who was confronting the South’s embattled past of slavery more intimately than she ever had before. While she strove to support the formerly enslaved people whom she taught, Rebecca also had to accept that she would never fully understand the hardships her new friends and students had endured in their past and the trauma they continued to experience as a result of their enslavement.
