The purpose of this chapter is to provide information, research-based recommendations, and practical resources for youth development practitioners, educators, and policymakers who want to better understand and enhance contribution among diverse groups of youth across the United States. Although all forms of contribution ultimately benefit adolescents’ personal development and promote their well-being, ... read morein this chapter, we focus on young people’s contributions to others and to their community because these forms have received the most attention in the research. We specifically focus on implications from PYD research regarding young people’s engagement with and contributions to their communities and society. That is, we focus on what has been learned from PYD research about young people’s contributions primarily in the form of civic engagement, and we discuss how such engagement can be promoted by invested adults within the context of youth development programs (also see Flanagan & Levine, 2010).read less
