This thesis focuses on the interconnection between PM 2.5 pollution, health effects of PM2.5 and impacts of related air quality policies in China. With the aim of investigating the gap between policy making and awareness of health effect of PM2.5, this thesis firstly studies two major types of diseases with high mortality related to PM2.5 and keeps track of the current and increasing historical ... read moretrends of air pollution of particulate matter and its causes in China. Currently, policies and other plans in China focus on the complex mix of air pollution and emissions, not just of PM2.5. This thesis includes a discussion of the environmental standards in China including the Air Quality Index (AQI) at different levels, the detailed five-year plans in China and the goal of Air Pollution Prevention and Control (APPC), the environmental policy and regulations, and their implementations based on reports from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) and Non-Profit Organizations (NGOs). By comparing the different approaches towards air quality improvement in the United States and the United Kingdom, especially on fighting smog, there are some common lessons from which China can learn: Local authorities' best knowledge of their local areas, the use of technical support, systematic regulations, an implementation authority, as well as reachable goals of pollutant mitigation.
