Abstract: The
optimum band structure for both multijunction photovoltaics, where layers of
semiconductor materials are connected in series, and split junction photovoltaic
systems, consisting of a number of physically separated solar cells, are investigated.
Possible implementations of these designs are suggested, based on design constraints
such as lattice matching, use of possible substrates, ... read moreand ease of material growth, and
then simulated. In order to realize these implementations, it was required to include
Tl-bearing semiconductor materials in the simulations; this is a class of materials that
has not been extensively studied, particularly for use in photovoltaics. Incorporation
of this class of materials in photovoltaics is shown to both improve the effectiveness
of some high performance cells already studied by other groups as well as allow for new
high conversion efficiency band structures.
