By understanding the way in which the military is practically utilized by that host nation government, a more coherent policy can be formulated toward that country. This thesis surveys five countries with which the United States has had an enduring and tangled security assistance relationship. It also reveals how U.S. military assistance can fundamentally alter the primary function of these militaries. This research posits that there have been substantial diplomatic shifts occurring on both sides of these bilateral relationships since the Arab Spring, and offers considerations to assist U.S. policymakers in navigating these changes.read less
