Abstract: Food Policy Councils (FPCs) are groups of stakeholders that come
together to make policy and programming recommendations to improve local or regional food
systems. Many FPCs aim to include a diverse group of participants, yet young people are
seldom offered the chance to participate in FPC affairs, despite the growth of youth
interest and contributions to the food movement. To date, ... read morethere has been little research
regarding youth involvement in FPCs. This research is focused on youth (defined here as
high-school aged young people) participation in FPCs, and highlights four examples of
Councils that are either youth-led, or contain a youth component of an FPC. The information
gathered from interviews informs the recommendations aimed at FPCs so that they may begin
or improve on engaging youth effectively in substantive decision-making
processes.
