Palmares was said to be the size of Portugal, it existed for almost a century and was under constant attack from the Portuguese military. When Africans escaped slavery in Brazil (and elsewhere) they would sometimes survive outside the plantations, in the mountains, swamps and forests, and establish their own communities.
