- The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a four session mindfulness-based training program for Tufts University student athletes by assessing mental health, mindfulness ability, and perceived stress before and after the intervention. High rates of suffering in college students are especially prevalent in student athletes and mindfulness has been shown to be effective in ... read morethis population. The mindfulness training program tested here was adapted from a program developed at the University of Southern California and funded by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Participants completed self-administered paper surveys before and after the intervention. Mindfulness ability was assessed with the Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale (CAMS-R), mental health was assessed with a modified Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), and stress was assessed with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). After this intervention, participants reported a statistically significant improvement in mindfulness ability (t(28) = -2.61, p = .014), mental health (t(28) = -2.87, p = .008), and a marginally significant improvement in perceived stress (t(28) = 1.86, p = .073). Over half of participants (55%) reported an improved ability to fall and stay asleep, and participants reported improvements in acceptance, awareness, and self-control in open response survey questions. In conclusion, a four-session mindfulness-based training program may be effective for improving mental health, mindfulness ability, and sleep in collegiate student athletes.read less
