Bumblebee workers can vary significantly in body size as a result of the care and resources given to them during development. There are different benefits to having workers of different sizes: larger workers are better at performing all tasks such as foraging and brood care, but smaller workers are more resistant to starvation. This paper explores how the size of workers produced in Bombus ... read moregrieseocollis colonies changes as the colonies age and the impact of worker size on the overall success of the colony. Previous studies on bumblebee ecology have used commercialized colonies, but this study is the first of its kind because natural bumblebee colonies were used. This shows that it is possible to locate bumblebee colonies in the wild and effectively study them.
