better accounts for academic success among a nationally representative sample of
8th and 10th grade students. I found that the model of motivation based on social
cognitive theory better accounted for achievement in the 10th grade cohort,
whereas the model of motivation based on self-determination theory better
explained academic achievement for the 8th grade cohort. Accordingly, these
findings, may be useful in designing interventions aimed at cultivating and
sustaining motivation in adolescence, a developmental period in which motivation
reaches an all-time low and where the stakes for academic success are at an
all-time high.
