Taking the history of the island’s status issue into account, this paper analyzes the
following questions:
1. What are the economic implications of statehood for Puerto Rico?
2. Are there variables that shape the Puerto Rican people’s identity that are correlated to
the islanders’ reactions to the notion of statehood?
3. Is statehood for Puerto Rico a feasible option at this time?
A vote in support ... read moreof the status quo or for free association would not cause changes as significant
on the island as would a vote for complete independence or complete integration with the US in
the form of statehood. When deciding between the two options for research between statehood
independence, I decided that an evaluation of statehood would be more practical because it is the
more probable option for Puerto Rico’s futureread less
