This project explores the role of the corner store in autonomous food purchases by the youth of Somerville, Massachusetts. I combine quantitative and qualitative data to examine corner stores as both a food source and a “third place”—a public place on neutral ground where people can gather and interact outside of home and work environments. In conjunction, the data sets suggest that future ... read moreinterventions in this setting should take into account the complex functions of the stores as well as the specific purchases youth are making there. I conclude with a recommendation for using mixed methods in order to gain a fuller picture of the factors and outcomes involved in youth’s autonomous food purchasing decisions.read less
